INSTRUCTIONS

LECTURES

Week 5 This week we practiced filming a sequence, we were assigned to teams and learned how to film a scene.
Week 6 We are on a shooting mission.

Week 7 Video color grading and the color grading process

Fig. 1.1 Color Processing Basics Week 7  (09/06/2024)
  • Hue refers to the color itself. In the simplest terms, it is the difference between red and blue. Hue can then be varied by saturation and brightness. Hue, saturation, and brightness together are called "HSB". This combination constitutes the basic color problem of any video image.
  • Saturation refers to the intensity of a color. It is determined by the amount of gray in the hue, ranging from pure gray to vivid colors.
  • Color brightness refers to the brightness level of a color. Each color is still red in hue and saturated to maximum, but with different amounts of white and black in the color value. A color with high saturation and a high brightness value might make the viewer feel energetic and happy, while the same hue with high saturation and a low brightness value might make the viewer feel fearful.
Coloring Tools

  • white balance
White balance in camera is the same as white balance in a color correction program. It describes the color temperature of the image
  • Oscilloscopes
Oscilloscopes (waveform, parade, histogram, vectorscope) are used to get some extra value color information that is not initially seen. An oscilloscope is a monitoring tool that displays color and light information on a graph. The waveform display, properly color correcting the lens, makes it easy to see the exact balance of the characteristic settings and how they compare to each other.
  • Curves
Curves facilitate precise color correction and color grading, allowing you to add points to drag colors to new values and change shadows, midtones, and highlights with greater precision.
  • Color Matching
Color Matching allows you to select a reference image which is then analyzed and applied to your target image. The best way to use Color Matching is when you have color corrected some footage and need to apply the same correction to a target clip.
  • Three-Way Corrector
Three-way color correctors are a useful tool for many colorists in professional entertainment, but they have their pros and cons.
The three-way color corrector lets you balance the shadows, midtones, and highlights of an image using color wheels. You can set numerical values, or use the control drag point to set your value based on hue.
  • Color Qualifiers
Color qualifiers give you the chance to change a particular color, or range of colors, without changing the rest of the picture.
You can also use color qualifiers to identify colors that you want to fix in place so that they won't change when you adjust other colors and elements in the picture.
  • Color Masks
In the DaVinci program, color masks are called Power Windows. These work a lot like masks in Adobe Photoshop. You can designate a shape to isolate its colors.

Select image material
  • Shooting in RAW format allows you to modify the characteristics of the image to a great extent, which is one of the attractive advantages of RAW, in addition to the general quality, but it takes up a lot of storage space (this is because RAW images have not been processed by the camera and parameters have not been set, so they are not compressed)
  • A picture profile is a set of parameters that determine the characteristics of the footage. Common picture profiles for professional video are "C-Log" (Canon) or "S-Log" (Sony), but there are many other profiles.
Correct video color
  • Color correction refers to adjusting black and white levels, exposure, contrast, and white balance to provide an image with accurate, unprocessed colors. The purpose of color correction is to ensure that subsequent color adjustments are more precise and do not produce unexpected results.
  • Another purpose of color correction is to create visual consistency for footage and scenes, and to achieve better smoothness of the overall video effect.
Video color grading
  • Color grading refers to the stylized color scheme of your footage. Color grading can be super extreme, like many popular films, or it can be fairly subtle to achieve color fidelity, like a nature documentary
  • Color grading is where your footage starts to look stylized, but unless the first two steps are followed correctly, it won’t look like what you intended

Week 9 stop motion trial shooting

This week we need to prepare the props, clay and cardboard for the freeze-frame test shots so that we can shoot smoothly in the week 10.

Project 2 /Shooting Practice & Editing

Project 2A: Production Shoot Video
This project required shooting 7 video clips, each team provided one. Before shooting, we were asked to download all the materials. After that, we determined each other's shooting roles and began to assign tasks. The director had to prepare the script in advance.

Fig. 1.1 Shooting Schedule Week 6  (02/06/2024)

In the sixth week, we started shooting the video in the studio. We prepared the camera, lights, recording equipment, costumes and other pre-shooting preparations, and then started shooting.

Fig. 1.2 Shooting Progress Week 6  (02/06/2024)

After shooting and editing the video, the next step we need to do color correction in Premiere Pro. In week seven, Mr. Martin taught us how to do color correction. We need to adjust exposure, contrast, highlights, and shadows. Exposure adjusts everything. If we increase exposure, everything will be affected. Because highlights only adjust the brightest parts at most. Shadows only adjust the darkest parts. Contrast is to increase or decrease highlights and shadows. If we increase contrast, highlights will go up and shadows will go down. Mr. Martin taught us to use compare view to split the screen to see the reference and the current clip we are working on.

We can use the Compare window to compare the before and after adjustment of the color.

After I adjust the exposure, contrast, highlights, and shadows, next I apply all color grading mentioned ( teal & orange, bluish (cold), greenish (cold), brownish (warm), desaturation (50%-70%), and B&W with high contrast) at different shots.

After I edit all the color correction and color grading, I started to add BGM with intense BGM and cinematic BGM and edit the video become interesting with adding and slowing the speed, split the clips, add text, and add effects.

Before start to do the project 2, we were asked to make a proposal and show our 3 favorite videos from tiktok. And here is my proposal:

Reflection

WEEK 5:This week I learned about the entire process of film production. A movie is the result of the hard work of a production team of hundreds of people. Everyone has their own responsibilities, and the quality of film production is very high. The director and producer are the core leaders of the entire team.

WEEK 6:After practicing last week, we officially filmed on our own this week. I needed to arrange everything needed for the filming with the team members in advance, so as to minimize the time. However, due to our unfamiliarity with filming, the progress was a little slow.

WEEK 7:This week I learned how to use color correction to create a cinematic look in videos. This was very helpful to me because many videos are not well lit and color correction can help fill in the light. I also learned that different colors can create different look in videos, which was interesting.
