Task 3 / Type Exploration and Application

INSTRUCTIONS

TASK 3:Type Exploration and Application

For this assignment, we were free to come up with our own project. We needed to research the use of fonts in a field that interested us, or develop a font that would solve a challenge in that field. The final product would be a developed font that could be used in any medium related to the problem being solved.

Instructions:
- Create a font: area of interest/specialization/personalization/improvement of existing fonts/experimental materials
- Come up with at least 3 ideas
- All uppercase and lowercase letters and punctuation
- Upload to Fontlab, adjust kerning
- Provide an application for how the font is rendered, related to the core idea and purpose of the font.

inspiration

I think the combination of Chinese font design and auspicious clouds is very interesting. I want to challenge the new Chinese style letter design, so I want to combine the Chinese auspicious cloud pattern with the letters to design the font.

Initial sketch
Fig. 1.3 sketch  Week 11  (01/07/2024)

I started sketching out the letters A-G and started brainstorming ideas based on the font inspiration. I also started modifying the font based on the instructor's suggestions.

After the capital letters were designed, I started to design numbers and symbols. Vinod sir suggested that I don’t need to make lowercase letters, so I started to work on the next step

Importing fonts in Fonlab 8

After transferring the letters, numbers and punctuation marks one by one, I started adjusting the kerning and adjusting their orientation according to the diagram given by Vinod sir.

Font rendering application

Because the font I designed is combined with the new Chinese style, I plan to display the whole display with Chinese elements and artistic conception.

Gold and red are the first colors chosen because they conform to the Chinese aesthetic and make the overall visual look simple and grand. "The sun and the moon shine together" is a virtual text to see if it fits the overall visual effect.

This is mainly the overall font effect. At the same time, for uniqueness, I added some texture and auspicious cloud patterns.

The third picture mainly shows the composition effect of the text. I use gradient to show the characteristics of the font with auspicious clouds.

Here I cut and paste gold to make the whole picture look more beautiful. At the same time, the combination of gold and red is more eye-catching.

While displaying the numbers, I wanted to make the overall picture look simple and highlight the font characteristics. I also added a little bamboo color to make the picture look balanced overall.

Use the model to apply the finished graphics. I chose some common objects.

For applied products, process them in Photoshop.

Feedback

WEEK 9:When choosing a design font, starting a business must be unique. You must establish your own reference fonts and foundation. It cannot be just an idea. You must see the actual effect. You must consider the difficulty of actual completion and narrow the scope based on the actual situation.

WEEK 10:When designing fonts, establish a grid line. Make sure the width between letters is consistent with the width of the letter shape. Pay attention to the endpoint details of the letters.

WEEK 11The contrast between the thickness of the font I designed is too obvious, so the thin lines are too thin. I need to thicken the thin lines. Mr. Vinod suggested that I thicken them at least three times to make the font. balanced.

WEEK 12Then I modified my fonts, some details, such as the overall visual size of the font, the contrast between thick and thin, and the middle line of the font.

WEEK 13Mr. Vinod suggested that I should not make lowercase letters because my font effect is not good enough when applied to lowercase letters, so I only need to make uppercase letters, numbers and symbols.

Reflection

For this project, I focused on creating an innovative typeface that was consistent across design and identity. I find it critical to maintain consistency. Even small inconsistencies can disrupt harmony and affect readability and aesthetics.

I find it critical to test typefaces across a variety of applications, such as print and digital media. This helps identify and fix issues like spacing and kerning to maintain consistency and visual appeal across different environments.

In conclusion, creating innovative typefaces requires a holistic approach. By paying attention to detail and rigorously testing the typeface in a variety of contexts, I was able to create a typeface that is both functional and beautiful. While the typeface still has a few minor flaws, this project deepened my understanding of the complex balance required for typography.

This book made me understand the importance and diversity of text layout. Using different layout methods in different application scenarios can have wonderful and surprising effects.
