Week 4
Production
Film production is divided into:
- Development:This is where it all starts. Development is the spark. A producer or screenwriter has an idea and they start to make that idea into a movie.Development is usually overseen by a producer, as they are responsible for putting the initial pieces together – the creative, financing, overall timeline, etc.
- Pre-production:Pre-production refers to all the preparation necessary before filming begins. In other words, it's everything that happens between financing and production. Three main things must happen during this phase:
- Budgeting: The producer creates a detailed shooting schedule, which will foresee the location, cast, crew, and equipment costs (among other things).
- Getting the team together: A film is often made by hundreds of people. For the crew, the producer will usually hire department heads - professionals such as cinematographers, production designers, costume designers, etc., with the director's input. The casting director will read the script, consult with the director, and audition all the parts that need to be filled.
- Pre-visualization: The director, and often their director of photography, will start planning how they want the film to look, which means making storyboards or writing out shot lists. It also means consulting with the production designer to decide how the sets will look, and meeting with the costume designer to think about the look of the costumes. Location scouting is usually accompanied by a technical scout, which refers to all the logistical considerations when choosing a location. How does the location transport to the space? Is there power? Sound issues? Where does the sun rise and set?
- Once the planning is complete (or, more precisely, as comprehensive as possible), it's time to start shooting.
- Production:Development, pre-production, day-of preparation: it all comes together. Here’s a quick rundown of the steps typically required on a shoot:
- The assistant director announces “Picture is up”
- The AD calls for quiet, then says “Roll sound,” prompting the mixer to hit record. Once recorded, the mixer responds with “Speed of sound.”
- The AD says “Roll camera,” and the camera operator starts rolling. Then they say, “Speed.”
- The clapper loader (second auxiliary camera) records, reads the scene information from the clapper board, and marks it.
- The director says action.
- When the scene is over, the director says cut.
- Post-production:Most people associate post-production with film editing, and while this is a critical part of the process, there are many other elements that come into play on stage.
- Picture Editing: Picture editing is when the footage is cut together to create a coherent film editor will go through three general edits, working with the director.
- The first stage is editing, which is mostly about the editor and director reviewing the footage, choosing shots, and putting them in sequence, with little regard for pacing. The second is the rough cut, where pacing is more important. And finally the fine cut, where decisions are more complex and the edit is close to picture lock.
- Sound Editing: Sound Mixing and Sound Editing, which is essentially putting all the sound effects, dialogue, voiceovers, etc. in their proper places. Listen to some of your favorite movie scenes and try to discern how much is going on on the soundtrack - chances are it's a lot more complicated than you initially realize.Sound Mixing, which refers to making all the levels fit the exhibit (and the various exhibit settings). It's a scientific process that takes years of training and practice
- Additional Visual Effects: Many shots have a lot of additional processing, including various types of visual effects such as compositing. There is computer-generated imagery (or CGI), which can involve anything from removing a poorly placed no parking sign to creating a brachiosaur.
- There is also color grading, which is done by a colorist. Depending on how the film was shot (film, RAW, etc.), this can take a number of different forms.
- Distribution:Like most of these phases, distribution is a huge umbrella term that encompasses dozens of different tasks and steps. Marketing In order to get people to see your movie, you need to tell them it exists. Movie marketing is a complex beast, and it can look very different depending on the movie's budget and projected box office.
Week 4 asynchronous class Quiz result:
Project 1 Exercise 1 Audio Dubbing:
Project 1 required us to dub and add sound effects to a video. In class, Mr. Martin assigned us to groups, and then we filled in the script, analyzed the video, and found the audio ourselves and put it into the movie video.
I dub and find the audio first, then put them on the video and edit them.

Reflection
WEEK 4:
This week I learned about the entire process of film production. A movie is the result of the hard work of a production team of hundreds of people. Everyone has their own responsibilities, and the quality of film production is very high. The director and producer are the core leaders of the entire team.
WEEK 9:
In this week's homework exercises, I learned how to process sounds to make them more dramatic, and how to use Adobe Audition to record and process sound effects. This is very interesting content, and I can achieve the effects I need through the changes in sound.
